4 Ways to Decorate a Beige Living Room

Decorate a Beige Living Room

Many of us are still living in the 90s….. in our homes that is.

Surrounded by beige walls and gold/yellow countertops, it’s hard to imagine an update could be possible without performing a complete remodel.

But it is possible.

We wanted to share a project we recently worked on to illustrate how some easy changes can really transform your home and give it that warm welcoming feeling which is all we want out of our home in the first place. To feel like it is giving you a hug when you step into that front door after a long strenuous day.

Our clients had just recently moved into the home and hadn’t yet invested into furniture and décor to get settled in.
This is a great footing for us to start with. We didn’t need to worry about incorporating any existing furniture or décor. Instead, we could interview the client on what their living style and likes and dislikes were so we could create a design which would work well for this family.

Here is a before picture of the front room as you walked into the home.

You will notice there is a lot of beige. That’s because the existing hard finishes with lots of yellow / gold and red undertones make it difficult to get ‘out’ of the beige family without performing that remodel.

We needed to be intentional in breaking up the beige by bringing in some friendly complimentary colors which would distract from this complex neutral color. We knew that in order to break up the walls, we needed to bring in some light window curtains. To choose a coordinating color, we went with blue and rust. Rust lives in the same color family as beige while still giving off a strong contrast, while blue is a color you can pair with almost anything (think blue jeans!). Saturation matters but that is for another blog, another day 😉

Don’t forget that lighting sets the mood. Bring in floor and table lamps where appropriate and turn them to give the room additional dimension and an atmosphere you can enjoy.

These updates will quickly make you forget the remodel you didn’t undertake. The beige is there but doesn’t overwhelm. Instead, our client can now lean back and enjoy their home for what it is today. No remodel (yet), but a lot more to love.
